I love my new iBrick
Stood in line for 1 1/2 hours, got the next to last phone they had available (16 Gig white - not my first choice) and now, after 4 hours of trying, I still can't activate it since apparently iTunes has crashed, and of course my old cell phone SIM is now deactivated.
Makes a nice paperweight though . . .

Yep. I am just trying to download the 2.0 update for my oldPhone. iTunes is buried. I have been able to download a half dozen apps, though. But no 2.0 update. It is nowhere to be found right now.
I can't wait to play super monkey ball!
Oh yeah, Exchange support will be nice, too.
There is a clever free one called "light" that jacks up your brightness and turns the screen pure white for use as a flashlight.

I saw this off of Drudge Report about the Apple issues:
Software problems bug Apple's launch of new iPhone
I'm glad I decided to wait; I knew there would be some sort of issue. I'm in no rush to get an iPhone but I'm glad to hear that you can download Active Synch so Microsoft Exchange email will work on it.
I hope it gets sorted out quickly for you...

Waiting on the Blackberry Bold on my end...
Can you open PDF files on the iPhone and scroll around freely? This is something the blackberry is not very convenient at.

Make sure you have the 7.7 itunes update installed.
Here is the direct link to the 2.0 firmware.
download file, connect iPhone, hold down the option key click, update, choose location of the file you just downloaded. good to go.

Yes you can. With the new version you can open all Microsoft office type applications and interact with them (apparently). Check out this demo I got from Apple. It's long (about 30 minutes) but pretty cool to see all its capabilities.

This is the right way to do it. I did mine last night like this. No problems with my update. The two people that I know who did it automatically had problems.
I also went to buy a 16 GB iPhone, but ATT is having an IRU problem. The store kept one on reserve which I can buy when ATT fixes their cr8p.

I noticed that 3G in my area has been disappearing at times today and reverting to Edge or GSM/GPRS - thanks to all those ibrick users taking up my bandwidth on AT&T no doubt...
FYI my local AT&T store said they had people lined up at 5am and they only got 50 phones and sold out in the first hour. I wonder if the Apple store got any more than the AT&T stores? They said you could order online and get the phone in 2-3 days.

I had an iBrick also this morning. Attempted to update my iphone and it turned into a brick. I never could get through to the itunes store this morning. I read on Apples support site that their servers crashed. Finally about 3 p.m. I was able to complete the process and I now have my phone back up and working. The new software works great and now we finally have the ability to have apps.

I am waiting to upgrade, not because of what is happening on the launch, but rather what is happening a bit down the road...

Never buy on first day...
I like Apple. I'm posting this from my iMac (as opposed to my Linux box or my Windows box or ...). But Apple does screw up. They are pretty good about fixing it once they do and they rarely admit there was ever a problem. But it's enough to scare me away from big launch events. Of course I avoid other companies big launch events also.
I bought an iPod touch for an overseas trip last winter, after having it a day I decided I wanted an iPhone. I also decided to wait for the 3G phone since it was clear one was coming this summer. I'm too old to deal with first day of release BS. So I'm going to get one in a month or so, when I can walk in and pick one up with no drama.
Now if they would only use the chips I work on instead of other companies parts. Maybe in 2 or 3 years...

It bothers me that people are using the term "bricked". I've had embedded devices for a long time and this is an incorrect usage of "bricked". Typically, when you update a device and it fails in the middle to the point where the firmware is corrupted and it is UNRECOVERABLE, then it is a brick. Essentially the only way to correct a brick is to plug the chip in or use a diagnostic device to correct the problem (which a user can not do). Since the update worked but the activation failed (and could be retried), this is not a brick. <RANT OVER>
Yes, this one stinks for everyone that was affected, but your phones are not unrecoverable.
To answer your question Ken, the majority of ATT stores around Memphis got 20. I know that the apple store had at least 400 and I'm betting it was over 1000. They had a line from early this morning and sold around 1 every 2 minutes. I have one on hold, thanks to AT&Ts glitch.

I like Apple
I am a devoted Apple guy, but don't have an iPhone. I do think it's funny, though, that there is such a wailing cry from the general public when on the first day of a launch a very robust web site gets overwhelmed and hardware is sold out in a couple of hours. Either the folks at Apple are really smart, or people are really stupid. If everything worked as planned, there would be less media coverage. They launch on a Friday, "fix" over the weekend, and are heroes on Monday. If news reports are to be believed, AT&T stores are being re-inventoried on Monday. If they could be there Monday, do you really think they couldn't be there Friday? People tend to want things they perceive that they can't have. Try buying a Wii in November or December.

I would hope so. I have a one year old iTouch and I can open email with PDF attachments and move around them freely, zooming included.

This is not a technical response to your rant. But I thought I would add that I do not think the "people" are calling it a brick as related to the true term as you have described. I read CNN online yesterday and the journalist kept referring to a process that every new G3 owner was required to complete inside the store which he/she labeled as "unbricking." They also stated that this process was not a part of the original iPhone process, where users could purchase the phone and leave the store, completing the connection/activation in their own homes. The journalist was using this as a way of stating the sales were slower (per minute) than the original phone because of the extra in store step.
I think in the end, when users completed the in store process, then went hone to try and do final activation and servers were down, they picked up this term of "unbricking" and used it as a way of describing the current state of their phone.....dead.....
I also think the journalist was possible hearing the term from their interviews with AT&T employees.

I read that the phone lacks 1. Picture messaging, 2. Voice dialing, 3. Video recording, and cut and paste tools. Most basic phones have at least the first 3 of these. How could Apple not include these? Also I hear 3G reception is spotty.

here in san diego, the wait at the mission valley store was seven hours - plus another 30 minutes once you finally got inside. and then, most were still unable to activate.
apple stock dropped over $4.00 yesterday because they bungled this rollout, bigtime. one website was calling it an "iPocalypse."
sometimes, being first just ain't worth it [and i'm an apple guy since 1989].
